Product Review Number 1 Fencing Company Australia Award 2023
Paling fences in many states are the basic form of getting the privacy and security your family needs to feel safe and secure at home. They can be very basic in design and range through to some higher end finishes such as those with exposed posts with lattice on top and so on. Here are some advice points on this type of fences that we offer to all our clients.
Posts:
We use oversized posts (300mm longer than usual minimum size) so as to get the posts into the ground deeper for added stability and to be able to get the top rail closer to the top of the palings to avoid a “banana” effect of the palings at the top of your fence. We will also advise on what type of timber post would be best, for example if in a termite zone we will often recommend using cypress as they are naturally termite resistant. We may also recommend or offer a steel post variant to you as steel is very strong, not prone to termite attack and are very long lasting (does not rot like timber does) and are particularly good in high wind areas as they don’t snap!
Footings:
In many cases we will recommend using concrete due to its superior strength instead of cement soil amalgam (cement mixed with soil), concrete is particularly superior to a fences ongoing stability especially in sandy soil conditions and on higher than usual fences.
Fence Materials:
For your plinth, rails and palings themselves we recommend best available quality Treated Pine as not only is it cost effective it is also more resilient to termite attack and weather damage in general. Paling fencing materials are just a step above packaging grade timber so it’s VERY important that the fence is built using best practices which includes not skimping on timber materials (many do this) and using the correct sized and number of galvanised fixings to ensure strength!
Capping and Lattice:
Again, we recommend Treated Pine for the same reasons above, you should also be aware that there is a fair bit of difference between “cheap lattice” and “quality lattice”, give cheap lattice one summer and you will see what we mean!
Protecting Your Fence:
Now that you have a PROPERLY built fence in place you may consider painting it to not only enhance its look but to also protect it ongoing, if painting the fence (or having it done for you) choose lighter colours if the fence is to receive a lot of hot afternoon sun, darker colours will attract heat and potentially warp the palings.
"Do it once or do it twice? Perhaps think of quality and not just the price!"
