In Victoria; we can build your retaining wall for you of any length, up to a maximum of one meter high.
Over 1 meter high requires engineer's drawings and specifications as well as being specifically licenced to perform the works.
Retainer walls unless properly built using the correct materials and construction methods won’t last long and, in some cases, may even be dangerous!
Here is what we will in most cases recommend to you re the building of your retainer wall.
Posts:
Galvanised H and or C channel type for both superior strength and stability, these are also long lasting and highly corrosion resistant. They can also be reused if timber sleepers are chosen when they become past there use by date.
Footings:
Concrete only, and lots of it!
Base of Soil Behind:
50 to 100mm Agy Pipe, covered with Geo Textile Mat and then Scoria, this gives you good drainage at the base of the soil behind the wall, low walls may not need this addition, but it is best practice.
Retainer Wall Material:
You can use a variety of timbers from Treated Pine through to Hardwood Sleepers for this purpose, but the ultimate for longevity and stability is concrete sleepers. Concrete sleepers come in a variety of finishes and colours.
Add concrete sleepers to the galvanised steel beams frame and you have a winning long lasting and stable combination!
