Exclusive Interview: Troy Gill
Name: Troy Gill
Location: Chelsea Heights
Franchise: V.I.P Fencing and Home Maintenance Chelsea
Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose your V.I.P. Fencing and Home Maintenance franchise?
The main reason I went down the franchise path was to own my own business. Buying into a franchise meant that I knew there would be an aspect of training provided, a support network, systems would be in place and knowing I would belong to a bigger group.
I wanted to get into a trade-based business, and I found V.I.P Fencing and Home Maintenance which ticked most of the boxes.
What did you do before taking up a franchise?
I was a Supply chain manager for a leading international manufacturer/supplier in the water industry.
How did you raise the finance?
Finance was raised via a loan and savings that I already had.
What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?
The 8-week training I received was excellent and to a very high standard. All the trainers were very supportive and patient to help and answer any questions that I had. The ongoing support from the Master Franchisee has also been invaluable.
What is a typical day for you as a V.I.P. Fencing and Home Maintenance franchisee?
My typical day consists of checking emails, followed by building on site, taking work leads and calls, visiting different sites to complete quotes, planning for upcoming jobs, and completing/following up on quotes.
What challenges have you faced?
My biggest challenges have been servicing leads that have come through and trying to be as fast and efficient with getting the quotes out and following up on quotes.
Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?
Initially becoming a franchisee has taken up a lot of my time. However, I feel that once I am more familiar with the running of the business and my construction skills increase, I will be able to have greater flexibility and options within my business and working career.
What marketing/promotional tools do you use to grow your V.I.P. F&HM franchise?
I’ve initially focused on servicing my leads, quotes, and clients. I’ve also used social media networking sites like Facebook to showcase my completed jobs and advertise my business within the local area.
What differentiates V.I.P. Fencing and Home Maintenance from the competition?
The initial training, the quality of work across the network and the ongoing support provided.
In your opinion, what makes a successful franchisee?
Quality customer service. Making sure you’re organised and listen to the people who have been there before you. Their help and support is invaluable.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?
Making sure that they understand the more you put in the more you get out. Don’t think that buying a franchise is going to buy you success but it will allow you the tools to be successful.
What are your plans for the future?
In the short-term future, I would like to ensure I have a good amount of work ahead of me. My long-term plans would be to employ somebody to assist me on the tools and possibly look to expand into other Home Maintenance avenues.
Would you do it again?
Yes, absolutely.
