From That to This! Series One
Here in Australia we are blessed with a warm and temperate climate that encourages us most of the year into our backyards. It is where we spend a fairly large part of our leisure time, from the family/friend's BBQ or to just having a cuppa while reading the Paper.
Decking/Patio areas are being transformed into outdoor rooms, ultimately featuring a smooth transitioning from inside the home to your outdoor kitchen, pool area etc. So, we all dream about it, either creating a new, extending and or refurbishing of an existing outdoor entertaining area, the following is dedicated to how you can make it a reality!
To that end we are sharing with you a decking outdoor entertaining project which was one of the largest outdoor leisure transformations we have ever engaged, this was for our own property and it certainly tested our ability to create and construct the project from start to finish.
Basic details on the build include:
- Closing up existing Pergola to turn into an internal extension – the dining room (Part of home renovation)
- Extending the deck, which meant gutting the entire existing deck including the spa surrounds.
- All new concrete stumps put in place, new sub floors, new decking boards, built in water feature garden, steps, pavilion, spa pool fence and gate, tiling, balustrade, screens, underfloor storage, low voltage lighting and outdoor power points, plus new gardens and lawn.

Now, back to you, do you want to proceed with your outdoor room/deck/entertainment area?
Then let’s get started
First:
You need to check with your local council the regulations and eventually acquire the correct permit(s)!
Second:
Ascertain your budget: We are often amazed at how some people don’t understand how much their dream will actually cost. Everything is dependent on materials used, how elaborate it is etc. Before you start doing anything at least have the right approximate pricing in mind then:
Third:
You will need a professional drawer for the plans
Fourth:
Plans will need to be submitted for approval and a permit(s) then issued
Fifth:
Engage your trades, eg: plumbers, electricians, builders, chippies, tilers, gardeners/landscapers and fencers where required.
Sixth:
Estimate again how much everything is when all of the quotes come in, and don’t just go for the cheapest quote(s)!
Check the tradies references/credentials etc, remember this is YOUR dream, which you don’t want to become a NIGHTMARE by using a poor selection criterion.
Seven:
Engage and go, hopefully by the end of it all you will be in Seventh Heaven, we know we are!
