Short storys on renovation projects. Basic build details plus how to get started.
From That to This! Series One
Here in Australia we are blessed with a warm and temperate climate that encourages us most of the year into our backyards. It is where we spend a fairly large part of our leisure time, from the family/friend's BBQ or to just having a cuppa while reading the Paper.
Decking/Patio areas are being transformed into outdoor rooms, ultimately featuring a smooth transitioning from inside the home to your outdoor kitchen, pool area etc. So, we all dream about it, either creating a new, extending and or refurbishing of an existing outdoor entertaining area, the following is dedicated to how you can make it a reality!
To that end we are sharing with you a decking outdoor entertaining project which was one of the largest outdoor leisure transformations we have ever engaged, this was for our own property and it certainly tested our ability to create and construct the project from start to finish.
Basic details on the build include:
So phew, quite a bit. To make it easy view our mini-clip on the job “From that to this!” Play video below.
Now, back to you, do you want to proceed with your outdoor room/deck/entertainment area?
Then let’s get started
You need to check with your local council the regulations and eventually acquire the correct permit(s)!
Ascertain your budget: We are often amazed at how some people don’t understand how much their dream will actually cost. Everything is dependent on materials used, how elaborate it is etc. Before you start doing anything at least have the right approximate pricing in mind then:
You will need a professional drawer for the plans
Plans will need to be submitted for approval and a permit(s) then issued
Engage your trades, eg: plumbers, electricians, builders, chippies, tilers, gardeners/landscapers and fencers where required.
Estimate again how much everything is when all of the quotes come in, and don’t just go for the cheapest quote(s)!
Check the tradies references/credentials etc, remember this is YOUR dream, which you don’t want to become a NIGHTMARE by using a poor selection criterion.
Engage and go, hopefully by the end of it all you will be in Seventh Heaven, we know we are!

Looking for a decent fencer is like looking for a good plumber, difficult. What makes Terry different to the others is he works alone and does the whole job with the same consistency and quality. He does not waste time and there is no loud music playing. He uses quality timber products and concretes in the posts. He also cleans up as he goes and leaves no mess. Some maybe cheaper, but I wanted a quality job that will last 20 or more years. I have had Terry construct 2 fences for me and would highly recommend him.

Dear Walter, Thank you for all your hard work and attentiveness to our property and garden. We have appreciated the courtesy you have demonstrated toward us; both you and your colleague, David, are gentlemen. We have no hesitation in recommending you to others and will keep you in mind for any future work. Kind Regards, Daniel and Sally B

"My neighbour & I chose Warren Smith to demolish a long wooden fence between my property & my neighbours', and erect a new timber fence in it's place. We chose Warren because his quote was very reasonable (we had 6 quotes in all), and because I knew Warren's workmanship was thorough & of a high standard from a job he & Cathy had done for me previously. The demolition of the old fence was complicated by the fact that it was completely covered by thick ivy growing from various spots along the fence. The amount of ivy on the fence was so heavy, it was pushing the old fence over. Warren (& 2 helpers) dug out & poisoned the roots of as much ivy a

Thank you Mark for the wonderful fence you built for me in a difficult situation. It's wonderful to deal with someone who takes such pride in his work. I highly recommend Mark Nagyivan to anyone in need of a new fence. His work is excellent.

"Thanks for all your help with the fence! Looked fantastic when I got home. Really happy with the extra effort you took with it. It was clear you had a passion for delivering a quality product and not taking any shortcuts. Also really appreciate how clean the yard was when you left and you helping us out by taking away that extra wood. I wasn’t expecting Taylah to ask you to do that sorry or I would have dismantled that makeshift step before you arrived. I guess you had a chainsaw so it hopefully wasn’t too much of a pain. Thanks heaps though!"
