This is part of our first home reno series. Please remember to read our "Reno & Home Improvement Advice" blog before you attempt such a large project on your own.
From Tired and Unruly to Organised and Cooly!
The Brief:
To have a cosy, clean and neat workshop that is separated from the garage itself and could in fact be easily converted into an external office space while still offering a larger than standard walk through space to access the backyard via a sturdy ramped deck and oversized back door.
The Journey:
Initially the area in question was open to the garage itself and had a weird one and one quarter exit door arrangement to get to the rear of the property. The short deck that went from the door to the yard was steep and rickety so not exactly user friendly! The concrete was very stained and the old kitchen cabinets were a horrid green colour with the walls and ceiling being a mustard colour.
We firstly built some new plaster bulkheads in the entrance way and then fitted a black roller door so you can section off the two areas. From there new paint was added to the ceilings and walls with skirts painted black and all timber work around windows and doors stained, a new stained oak door and matching to the house door handles was fitted that opens to an extended new deck ramp.
Carpets and rubber mats were put down on the floor. Cabinets were painted black using a special decking type paint for durability along with nickel handles fitted turned on their sides to give a unique look and a hardwood benchtop was also added to cabinet to give a durable and high end look to the cabinets. Several new stained timber shelves throughout the workshop area were also added.
My dear old Dads workbench also found a new home in it which is both solid and has great storage space underneath.
